Happy Halloween...
Top 10 Most Scary Things in Sports Right Now
10. Kansas is the #8 team in the Nation... and they have beat NOBODY this year. Unless you call beating a weak-sauce 6-3 Texas A&M team a big win. Didn't think so. Let's only hope BC and the Jayhawks win out and that's our "National Title Game." Think about it, even you might watch Seinfeld re-runs that night. I'll only watch because it's my job. Allegedly.
9. Les Miles making 4th down calls or managing the clock in the final quarter of a game. Sorry LSU fan... you know its true. Florida and Auburn almost dug their grave
8. The Ole Miss Defense
7. The Ole Miss Offense
6. Jeff Bower's stare at his quarterback after yet another turnover. Only a coach with as much skill as he possesses could have that team at .500
5. Mitch Kupchak's legacy... the GM of the L.A. Lakers might be remembered as the guy who traded both Shaq - and Kobe - now that will go down in history
4. Tim Tebow. The guy is a beast. He gives defensive coordinators nightmares. And me on my couch watching him run over people. Dude is a bad, bad man.
3. The Yankees basically getting rid of Joe Torre. The Steinbrenners have not only shown they no longer possess any intimidation, with anyone in baseball, they have also proved once and for all they are dumb. And now the L.A. Dodgers are striking fear in the National League... sounds like Joe and A-Rod are headed out west? See you in October fellas. Think Blue Baby.
2. The Boston Celtics. Never has a team in NBA history won 33 games in season, followed that up with a HUGE 24 wins the following year (they play 82 games people) and then been picked by everyone to go the NBA Finals the next sesason. Such is the case in Bean-town... where KG, Ray Allen and Paul Pierce are creating the Boston Three Party that could win the franchises 17th World Championship in '07-08. Nice work Danny Ainge. You are the man... and went from a Goblin to a Prince overnight. Nice costume change bro
And finally...
1. Tom Brady. Plain and Simple. Not only is he shattering records left and right this year, and probably leading his team to the first ever 16-0 season in NFL History... but he's also on the way to a 4th NFL Title. And he's only 30. But that's not where it ends... he's dating Giselle Bundchen - think hottest woman on the planet besides my wife - and that's her. He strikes fear in all men... on and off the field. You can admit it... we all know your jealous. Put down your kids candy and get to the gym - at the very least its a start

2007 Fall Classic...
It's that time of year again... cool temperatures, overcast skies , rain that comes down sideways... and the World Series! Man this is a great country!
We all have our first memories of the Fall Classic! Mine go back to 1986, when Boston played the New York Mets, and Bill Buckner became synonymous with every person who will ever allow a clutch ground ball to go thru their legs! Who can forget Ray Knight rounding 3rd base to score, dancing up and down like a cheerleader as he crossed home plate? It was my introduction to baseball... and when Kirk Gibson hit the "I don't believe what I just saw home run" against the A's in the '88 World Series, as a die-hard Dodger fan, I'll forever be hooked. It still gives me chills to watch that highlight! Think Blue Baby!
Well this year the Colorado Rockies and the Boston Red Sox go at it to claim the title of World Champion. The Rockies are playing in their first ever World Series, and having won 21 of 22 games, are red-hot and full or promise. The Red Sox won the title in 2004, and are looking for their 7th World Championship in their history. It should be a fun match-up, but it won't be close.
Colorado will get swept. Right under the rug and back to the snow in Denver. Bottom line is this - when it comes to the post-season - pitching wins championships. When you combine Josh Beckett, Curt Schilling and Dice-K you get 3 wins in the first 3 games... and then Game 4 won't even matter! It'll be mute at that point! Not to mention Big Papi, Kevin Youkilis, Man-Ram and guys like that in your line-up... forget about it.
So it's been a fun ride, and I'm one to say I've enjoyed ROCK-tober... but I'm sorry Rockies' fans.. it's OVER.

Wildfires Rage On...
What is up Mississippi?
Having spent the last five years in California before we moved to the Magnolia State, obviously our eyes and ears have been glued to the television in the wake of the deadly fires that are engulfing the southern half of the state. Luckily, all of our loved ones and friends are safe, but it puts into perspective just how fragile life is here on planet Earth... and reiterates to us the things that are really important.
Sports have been effected for sure in the Southland. Pepperdine has cancelled all athletic events and practices, as has San Diego State and the University of San Diego. The Aztecs were to host BYU on Saturday night at Qualcomm Stadium, but that game has now been postponed to December 1st. The Chargers have re-located to Arizona for the week, and there home game against the Texans is up in the air for Sunday afternoon. Not to mention the countless high schools and smaller colleges we don't hear about who have been put out by these fires that will not go out.
Christi and I ask you to join with us in praying for the people of Southern California as they deal with this devastation... much like all of us out West did for those here in the South when Katrina struck the Gulf Coast two years ago. And this Friday night when you are out a high school football game, or on Saturday when you walk in the gates of a college game... count your blessings... and remember those in So Cal who only wish they were as fortunate - and could get back to normality and sports in their region of the country
It's what makes America so great, in the face of adversity, we come together

Reverse This...
Are you kidding me?
I was raised to live my life based on two principles... integrity and trust. My dad would preach, as a former coach and Marine... to always tell the truth, and learn to trust others while at the same time being a trustworthy individual in your own right. After all, if those two things don't exist, it's impossible for any relationship to work - let alone thrive.
Obviously, the SEC and its league executives and commissioner don't feel the same way. After allowing a call to be reversed on the field in the final seconds of the Alabama-Ole Miss game, and then reviewing the tape and saying that the officials on the field made the right call in hindsight... is not only a disgrace and slap in the face to all of us who love sports by either being a fan or covering them for a living - BUT more importantly a blind-sided two-by-four across the face of every player who wore an Ole Miss uniform this past weekend. It is nothing short of a joke. To be honest, it's borderline criminal.
And let me preface one thing ok? I'm not an SEC homer. I graduated from a BIG 12 school and covered the PAC-10 for five years, so this is un-biased opinion based upon what is right and wrong. Plain and Simple.
Rogers Redding, the SEC's coordinator of officiating... said the replay official was right in ruling that Shay Hodge was not "blocked" out of bounds, as the rule requires for him to come back into play and make the catch. He also said Hodge touched the ball first on re-entry... and look, I have two eyes and a brain that works as well... and both points are in-conclusive. Those are the facts. Just like the history books are now... the ones that read Ole Miss is 2 and 5 on the year... even though their should be an asterisk next to the 'Bama game denoting they were cheated out of the right to compete on the field to actually change the result.
And how hilarious is it... that weeks later we still hear and read about Mike Gundy's infamous rant (after a victory nonetheless) about one of his players getting called out in the media. It's big time football Coach, you get paid millions and your players go to school for free. Criticism is what you sign-up for... take it like the 40 YEAR OLD MAN you say you are! Yet weeks from now... we won't hear a word about Ole Miss or the fact that they fought for 59 minutes and 53 seconds to try and turn around their season... and the game was supposed to last for a full 60.
That makes me want to puke Christian

Parity Reigns
Glad to be back with you boys and girls...
Here's what we learned this past week in college pigskin... anybody can beat anybody at anytime. How else do you explain Stanford knocking off USC in the Coliseum? Or the week before, when we saw 6 teams in the Top 13 fall? With a decrease in scholarships, and an increase in athletes and solid high school coaching from coast to coast - this is what can happen! I mean the Trojans third string line-up on the depth chart beats Stanford 9 out of 10 times... but that's why you play the games!
What do you think? Does parity reign? Can Ole Miss knock of Bama this week? How about MSU hosing Tennessee? Can the Dogs bite the Vols? If you don't believe... just take a trip west to the Bay Area... where now they believe anything is possible!

MLB Playoff Time...
What a great night of baseball! It doesn't get much better than watching teams who played all season long, and one that even survived a play-in game, hit the diamond for what should be some of the best playoff action in a long time. Why will this year be any different you ask? Easy. The field is wide open.
The Rockies could win it all because they're hot. They've won 15 of 16 games, and have the hitting to get it done. Philly could win it all as well... with a rotation built on youth and a line-up that can score runs at will, watch out for Cole Hamels and company. The D-Backs are battle tested, having played in the NL West all year and surviving the back and forth with the Dodgers and Padres. They have solid pitching, know how to win close games (over 30 one-run games), and most of all have recent success in the post-season to drive their city and fans to believe they can get it done. And how about the Cubbies? Chicago made a 180-degree turn after Carlos Zambrano went after Michael Barrett on June 1st. There was a clear exchange of slaps and pushes, and if the players hadn't been pulled apart, punches could have been thrown (Zambrano's arm definitely looked cocked). But then something amazing happened, June 2nd arrived and the Cubs started winning. Who cares if Sweet Lou never shaves, or if they haven't won a title since 1908, or haven't played in the World Series since 1945... this could be there year if Alfonso Soriano and Derek Lee decided to take over. And they're good enough to do it. Allegedly.
Check back next time for my AL Take...
And for the Record - I can't stand the Yankees

He's Back...
In more ways than one we're talking about a return on this Monday! First off, let me just say that last week was one of the busiest I've ever experienced in television! Sure I had fun, but spending hours upon hours at Annandale Golf Club covering the Viking Classic, coupled with Friday's Blitz 16 Extravaganza, made for a jam-packed week and thus no blog entries! But we're back and on schedule... kind of like Chad Campbell's golf game.
The native Texan captured his 4th PGA Tour title on Sunday afternoon right here in the metro, and with it salvaged an '07 season that was anything but up to par. For a player of Chad Campbell's pedigree anyway. In 2003, he won the prestigious Tour Championship and finished seventh on the PGA Tour money list. He claimed a second PGA Tour win in 2004 at Bay Hill... and made a strong start in 2006, winning the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic in La Quinta, California. But 2007 had been a rough one for the notoriously good ball-striker. Leading up to this year's tournament in Madison, Campbell only had one top-ten finish, and shockingly only 4 top-25's. For a former Ryder Cup member and one of the game's most consistent players, it was a drop-off few saw coming.
Yet anyone who has ever played the game competitively or covered it extensively knows... Golf is a strange game that can lead you towards riches and fame, and then simply leave you standing there beating your putter over your head after yet another missed cut. Or missed birdie putt for that matter. Just ask Woody Austin.
My point is that Campbell is a great player, who grinded it out for years on the mini-tours before breaking thru and making a name for himself. Yet he plays golf for a living. It's unpredictable, it's a mental maze thru your own mind without a starting point or an ending destination, a sport where the secret formula for success is about as well-known as why Brittney Spears went from hot-diva with a snake around her neck to a washed-up, fat mommy. If you could stop the madness when it's happening, you would. Problem is... you can't... all that's left to do sometimes is battle threw it and hope to come out on the other side. Campbell did this week.
It was a great event, with a great title sponsor, and even better fan support. Randy Watkins the tournament director, everyone at Viking, and most importantly you the fans should be commended for presenting the state of Mississippi in such a positive national spotlight! It was an honor to be there and cover the event, and an even bigger thrill to see professional sports here in the state we live in!
And seriously... who cares about The President's Cup anyway?
